Committee to develop the Negev and Galilee, headed by Vice Premier Negev and Galilee Development Minister - Silvan Shalom has confirmed this week, the plan drawn up in cooperation with the Minister of Culture and Sport Limor Livnat, aimed at positioning the tourist city of Eilat as international sports.Financial assistance will be given initially by the Ministry of Culture and Sport, and the Ministry of Negev and Galilee Development will be assigned in part to host the world championships and European championships in various sports, every year, attracting thousands of athletes from Israel and abroad.
The program also will be emphasizing the development field competitions and sporting events in Eilat, including construction and upgrading of sports facilities to contribute to the development of the Negev region of Israel. Acting Deputy Mayor - Eli Lankri, who represented the city of Eilat in the discussion, presented the enormous potential of the city has ofhosting major international sports competitions as well as world and European championships in various industries. Lancry added Eilat's comparative advantage due to the infrastructure as well as being an island of stability in the Red Sea Gulf Arab state, democratic and modern. Lancry also stressed the possibility to differentiate from its competitors , labeling it as a city of international sports and tourism. The Fed Cup tennis last week hosted by the city, attracted about 2500 visitors and sale of 10,000 tickets allocated to games in the four days of competition. "The athletes who come to Eilat became the best ambassadors of the city and state," said Lancry. Eilat will host this year the European Championships open water swimming in 2012 the European Championships in triathlon and weightlifting world championship.
